- I do believe I remember reading something about this myself, but it
- was in a manual for a different card - I think it might have been a
- generic S3 card with 1MB DRAM. One of the things I do for a living is
- build clone computers and as a cost effective solution we offer a
- generic S3 card, low price but still having the quick DOS/Windows
- response of the S3 chip. I think this problem has been fixed in newer
- versions of this card.
-
- Before going out and buying a new video card, you might want to
- consider reconfiguring your modem to use a different COM port.
-
- - Your mouse is more-than-likely using COM1.
- - You probably have an existing COM2 port in your computer, though
- chances are its not being used.
- - COM3 is not a good choice because it can conflict with the mouse.
- COM1 and COM3 both use IRQ 3.
-
- My suggestion is to disable the existing COM2 port (if it exists) and
- configure the modem for COM2. There are two different ways to do this
- depending on your computer.
-
- 1) Almost all newer computers, and most name brand computers both old
- and new, have there COM ports, video, IDE, etc., built directly on the
- motherboard. Disabling the COM port can be simply changing a jumper
- on the motherboard. If this isn't the case, then there should be a
- way to disable it through the computer's CMOS.
-
- 2) If your computer has an IDE/serial or serial card that has the COM2
- port on it, then you can disable it by jumper setting on the card.
-
- Hope this helps,
